Women are becoming more skeptical that men will elect them to high-ranking political positions. This is the primary reason for women to be underrepresented in leadership positions as compared to the thirty-one percent of males. Sixty-three per cent of women are in agreement. This gap isn’t just restricted to politics. The same problem exists in the system of party. Women are more likely to say there are obstacles that hinder them from being successful than men.
Ex-presidents of Malawi, Finland, or Sweden are all examples of female leaders in international matters. Joyce Banda, former president of Malawi is an example of women in politics. She was a part of the Oslo Center for Peace and Human Rights and cochaired the UN High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability. She is an example for girls and is a positive role model for women who hold leadership posts. Women’s political leadership faces many obstacles However, there are ways to overcome these difficulties.
Women have never been given the chance to lead because they’ve been “cut.” Simone de Beauvoir said, “Her wings were clipped.” This was true for centuries. While women were not thought to be fit to be in public life however, a few women have made exceptions. Today, women are in leadership positions at all levels of government, including the White House, Senate, and the U.S. Senate.
The public has a different view of women in leadership positions. In a recent survey, we asked respondents to share their views of women in high-ranking positions in politics. More women than men think that female leaders are more compassionate and understanding than male counterparts. While half of all adults believe that gender does not have an impact on the way women behave, more say that women in top political offices maintain the tone of civility.
This is evident in the recent election of the first Native American woman to Congress. They are Debra Halaand, Teresa Leger Fernandez, and Mary Kunesh-Podein. Debra Halaand was actually selected by Joe Biden to serve as his secretary of the interior in January 2021. Other examples include Stephanie Bice, the first Iranian-American woman to serve in the House. She is also the first Iranian American to serve in the U.S. Congress. And Cory Bush, the first Black woman elected to the Missouri legislature, is an early pioneer in the history of women’s leadership positions. Know more about More women in politics here.
Summit for Democracy, a biden administration initiative, launched a series of commitments to tackle the anti-democratic headwinds that plague diverse countries. One of the new U.S. government initiative is the Advancing Women’s & Girls’ Civic and Political Leadership Initiative. The initiative will invest $33.5 million in efforts to increase women’s participation in the civic arena and overcome barriers to political participation. Therefore, we should be optimistic about the coming few months!
Gender analysis is one way to understand the root causes behind women’s lack of political power. While gender is still an important factor in the development of political power, it’s not enough to eliminate all the barriers that prevent women from participating in the political process. Change in the political landscape cannot be achieved without social change. Through social change, women’s political representation will be guaranteed over the long-term. This is because ensuring equal representation in the political arena requires equality of gender in the society.
Policymakers must not only empower women in leadership positions, but also seek to increase women’s participation at decision-making levels. It’s not always straightforward to measure power dynamics within the political system. For instance, in Nepal, a progressive gender-quota was implemented. This increased women’s participation within local government. Yet, men continue to control local decision-making, and the majority of municipal chair positions and mayoral offices are held by men. To increase women’s leadership in politics There are numerous training programs that promote diverse leadership. The Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy provides a number of fundamental programs. They provide training and resources for women who are interested in running for office and also develop new leaders. Women who are interested in applying can do so to join the WELead2023 program in order to get more involved in politics. The WeLead program is offered for free to those who are accepted.
Participation of women in politics is crucial to achieving democratic justice, equality and fairness. A fair representation in the political system results in better outcomes for girls and women. Further, it promotes economic growth and growth. There is no debate that the case for women’s empowerment is convincing. Women can’t afford to be less than half of the population.
